Heidelberg is one of those German cities that actually looks like the picture book version of "Germany", with little winding cobblestone streets lined with old houses, one right after the other, none looking like it could stand up on its own if it wasn't packed in against all the others because of the crooked walls and bent angles. There are window boxes overflowing with flowers in enough of the windows that each street looks like it is full of flowers. Of course not all of Heidelberg looks this way, but somehow, magically, we ended up in the middle of the land of children's nursery rhyme pictures. Here is our street, looking down on it from our apartment:
Bella has discovered that when you are riding over the cobble stones in the stroller you can sing and it makes a lovely sound. She becomes a little irritated when we reach the smoother (still cobblestone, but more like a sidewalk) parts.
Here is our street looking up, towards the Hauptstrasse (again taken from our apartment).
And here is our street looking down, eventually curving towards the river.
Straight across the street from us is an old house covered in vines with big old shutters that are clearly not currently in use.
And here is a slightly closer version of the window boxes on a house down the street a couple of doors. I noticed, when taking this picture, that in this case they are just large pots set on the sill, with nothing holding them there. I think I will be sure to not walk close to the building right there anymore.
